Star Wars – Character Builds

FFG – Bounty Hunter – Martial Artist / Marshal

Here is a series of articles walking through the character creation process of Characters in the Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) Star Wars system. It will contain notes about why certain choices were made for the campaign it was built for as well as a complete stat block that can be used to run the character in a game session.

Step 1 – Background

For this character the selected background elements were Down and Out and she knew he family has stayed behind while she was put with the gadgeteers family and did not make it off Mandalore.

The other aspect was A Higher Calling as their family had lost so much face, she has dedicated herself to the rebuilding of the clan honour.

  • Attribute – Background – The Down and Out
    • Codemane – Kaph, Lamedh, Mem, Nun, Ayin, Sade, Qoph
    • Starting XP +5
    • Starting Obligation +5 to Oath
    • Storyline Hook – The purge and exodis was hard on your family. Many members were lost, or lost their way. The call to rejoin was the best thing that happened to you. Most of the clan is at this level, and your standing in the clan is in jepordy. You have had to make certain primises to the clan for them to accept you. What are they?
  • Attribute – Background – A Higher Calling
    • Increase your Oath by +10 (gaining 10 XP)
    • Storyhook – You have taken a deeper oath of service than the other, and need to write down what those promises were.

Note: Normally additional obligation and experience is not gained in this step, as part of the narrative for the storyline, characters have gained these optional boosts with the backstory.

Step 2 – Obligation

All characters start with two base obligations for their characters. This is setting the scene and tone for the campaign.

  • Attribute – Obligations
    • Family (starts at 5) Your working to keep the clan alive, what ever money you make you intend to put back into the clan who shelter and keep you alive.
    • Oath (starts at 5) You oath of service to the clan has brought you much in the way of chances. It has lead to you becoming a trusted member of the clan, as long as you keep to the oath.

Step 3 – Species

All orignial characters are part of the Mandalorian race.

  • Attributes – Racial – Mandalorian Human
    • Brawn – 2
    • Agility – 2
    • Intellect – 2
    • Cunning – 2
    • Willpower – 2
    • Presence – 2
    • Wound Threshold – 11 + Brawn
    • Strain Threshold – 10 + Willpower
    • Starting Experience – 105 XP
    • Starting options – One rank in a combat skill of their choice or two ranks in knowledge skills of their choice. Starting characters cannot have skills higher than rank 2. Knowledge – Core Worlds and Lore

This was limited for story reasons having the group being formed from those who show promise in the clan, but are not their best and brightest.

Note: Due to the build of the characters, this player taking Ranged – Heavy has cut the teams potential XP by 1/3.

  • To fit with the character creation theme, Melee has been selected instead.

Step 4 – Career

For this storyline, the orignial characters are all bounty hunters.

  • Attributes – Career – Bounty Hunter
    • Career Skills – Athletics (B), Brawl (B), Perception (C), Piloting – Planetary (A), Piloting – Space (A), Ranged – Heavy (A), Streetwise (C), Vigilance (W)
    • Starting Characer gains one rank in four career skills of thier choice.
    • Starting Character chooses one of the following specialisations for free: Assassin, Gadgeteer, Martial Artist, Operator, Skip Tracer, Survivalist

Bounty Hunter Story to be selected as part of session 2

Note: Due to the build of the characters, this player taking Ranged – Heavy has cut the teams potential XP by 1/3.

  • To fit with the character creation theme, ranged – Heavy has been moved to a 2nd rank in Perception. Was actually an issue with Brawl as well, fixed session 12.

Step 5 – Specialisation

  • Attributes – Specialisation – Martial Artist
    • Career Skills – Athletics (B), Brawl (B), Coordination (A), Discipline (C)
    • Starting Characer gains one rank in two career skills of thier choice.

Note: Due to the build of the characters, this player taking Coordination has cut the teams potential XP by 1/3.

  • To fit with the character concept, Coordiantion has been dropped and Discipline now has two ranks in it.

Step 6 – Attributes

Normally for this step characters would invest in Attributes, Skills, Talents and the Force. But as part of the storyline about not been the best and brightest, I am having them start with being the Best in one attribute and Stronger than most in another.

  • Attribute – Starting XP – Best in Brawn
    • Starting Brawl is 4
  • Attribute – Starting XP – Strong in Agility
    • Starting Agility is 3

Note: This is an update as my notes said Agility 4 and Intelligence 3 for a mistake.

Step 7 – Derived Attributes

  • Attribute – Wound Threshold
    • 11+ Starting brawn + talents
  • Attribute – Strain Threshold
    • 10+ Starting willpower + talents
  • Attribute – Defence
    • Ranged Defence 0
    • Melee Defence 0
  • Attribute – Soak Value
    • Brawn + Talant + Gear

Step 8 – Motivations

Each of the characters has one motivation to choose and gains an additional motivation as a campaign motivation. Motivations are sorted out at the end of each part of a story chapter. This could be 1 to 5 sessions.

  • Attribute – Motivations
    • Team Player – So seek to expand your skills to complement those naturally gifted in your team strenthening you ability to work together.
      • A Character earns +5 XP if their skills in their best attribute are lower than those who are average in that skill
      • A Character earns +5 XP if their average attribute based skills are higher rank than those who are strong or best in those attributes.
    • Players choice.

Step 9 – Gear and Appearance

  • Credits 500

    • 25 Binders, 10 Synthskin, 15 Truncheon, 50 heavy Clothing = 100
    • 25 Comlink, 75 Stun Grenade = 100
    • 300 Light Blaster Pistol
  • Weight – (4/5) Fraction Items for every 10 items it adds an additional 1 encumbrance
    • Fraction Items (3) Binders, Comlink, Synthskin
    • Enc 1 (2) Light Blaster Pistol, Stun Grenade
    • Enc 2 (1) Truncheon
    • Note: Heaving clothing add 1 enc if carried and not worn
  • Bind-1 – Binders Encumbrance: -, Price: 25 credits, Rarity: 0
    • Breaking free of binders is often a matter of either sheer brawn or impressive agility and flexibility. The difficulty of each restraint is different depending on make and model, but the most common restraints require a Daunting (♦♦♦♦) Athletics or Coordination check to escape.

Sesion Updates

Session 2 – Martial Artist

Choose reason for accepting the bounty hunter Lifestyle.

  • Aggression – There are those in the galaxy who just need to hit people, or do something both active and dangerous. Marching in ranks and following orders doesn’t suit them but beating some one into unconciousness before handing them over for a paycheck certainly does. Such a Hunter may have washed out of Military Service, or decided to run from assault charges (or worse) and this seemed like a good fallback plan.
  • Disgrace – Utter failure or a terrible tragedy might well drive him to seek a career that takes him away from his former life. Tracking criminals across the galaxy, he can build a completely different life and reputation for himself, hoepfully leaving his past behind him. However, he may not be so lucky.
  • Honour – Some people find that the law they serve is being trod upon by the very people for whom they work. Others watch corruption and tyranny crush everyone around them, and they come to decide they’ve had enough. Such a Bounty Hunter may have been a law enforcement agent, or perhaps just someone who decided enough was enough. he’s decided to defend justice and the law in his own way, perhaps even against those he once served.
  • Legacy – Perhaps his father – and his father’s father – was a bounty hunter, and he’s chosen to follow the family tradition. It could be that he is from a culture that reveres those who track transgressors, or that an honoured friend wanted to pass his skills along to someone. Whatever the source, such a bounty hunter tends to view the traditions of the trade with great reverence and respect.
  • Revenge – Many bounty hunters get into the business as a means to achieving revenge against someone (or a group) that has otherwise escaped justice. Their initial motives are very personal, usually due to the loss of something or someone precious to them. once justice is achieved, however, a person who has trained and practiced such skills and talents will often discover this is now his path.

Questions and Answers as the Start of the session.

  1. Who are you – Kyanna is stoic, straight forward, and will always complete her mission. The only time we saw her relax was with her party members, and really let loose that time when Piper got her drunk. Through the bounty hunters guild she was essentially forced to go from faceless soldier to a leader, and over time she has slowly accepted that she has a voice but has doubt, often opting for a cohesive decision versus a solo one. She now sees herself as someone who can protect, but is silently unsure of herself. She is afraid of being “wrong” or not the picture of what a Mandalorian of her clan is supposed to be.
  2. What do you want – She wants to prove herself worthy of being called a Mandalorian of the Star Wing Clan. As one of the older ones of the group, the day of the down fall severely affected her as she lost her close family as she was sent with the gadgeteers family ship, and feels that she could have done more. Coming from a low status background, not much expected from her. She wants to prove to her family she lost and to the clan that she is worth the chance she was given and can be a worthy protector so she never has to lose family again.
  3. Whom do your serve – Kyaanna serves her duty where she is told to go. She was told to be a bounty hunter, she did. She was given the opportunity to earn protection through training with the Rangers, she took it seriously. When she is given a mission/bounty/order, she follows through as she seeks the validation of a job complete.
  4. Where do your loyalties lie – Her loyalty is first to the clan, then party members, then orders. She wants to do everything she can to show she is able to protect and be worthy. She knows others have their own loyalties, and she does not judge, she only tries to protect them from potential harm.
  5. What was your last bounty – collected Solo that granted you the right to become a member of the Elrood Bounty Hunters Guild – The bounty she collected solo was good but not difficult – she chose to go after a guy that had been harassing people in alleys, taking their credits, challenging them to illegal fights as he was building a small gang around himself. Rosh Danakar, human-appearing male, tough talker who thinks himself slick, but Kyanna did not put up with it. She chose him as she wanted to “choose right” by grabbing a bounty she know she could do. After confronting him in an alley and a bit of a tussle, she was able to bring him in alive.
  6. What was your defining moment is the last six months away from your clan – Time away from the other party members, she’s lost a bit of her identity and is anxious about not being seen as a real Mandalorian, so she has thrown herself into her training, becoming more and more focused on her goal of becoming “worthy”. It is only with her other clan members where she allows herself to feel relaxed, as the ridiculous bunch that she was given the opportunity to work with are all the family she needs to get by.
  7. What Upgrades have you selected – (Let me know if I’m doing this correctly, I may need help because I really don’t remember), if it was 25 XP to spend, 10 XP for career skills you don’t have, 5xp for career skills you do have, then I would do skills in coordination (10), piloting planetary(10), and vigilance (5). Again, let me know if I did that right – Not with a rejig to be fair on everyone else and your character due to mistake in my note I have updated below based around this suggestion. Brawl Rank 1 (5 XP) Coordination Rank 1 (5 XP), Ranged – Heavy Rank 1 (5 XP), Athletics Rank 2 (10 XP)
  8. What are you Accredited for with the Empire? . She became accredited for pistols, melee weapons and planetary vehicles (not sure if just pick one? If so, pistols. May need help with this if what I said didn’t quite make sense)
  9. Do you keep your Bounty Hunter licence – Yes, kept the license as that was what she was told to do, and she does not want to be seen as wrong for giving that up.
  10. How much money do you send to your family – She sends 90%, keeping the 10% to assist her with upgrades and items she needs to make herself a better protector.50 credits and -4 obligation to family.
Session 20 – Martial Artist / Marshal
  • For the 8th February 2022
  • Character Gains at least 10 XP +5 XP (Honour)
    • Purchased – Ranged Light Rank 1, Precision Strike and Parry

  • Free Marshal Specialisation added to character from backstory elements with the Grit rank 1 talent.
Session 24 – Martial Artist / Marshal
  • Changes of Obligation based on playstyle.
    • Family 1 (Links to personal family as security specialists of the clan.)
    • Oath 20 (Promises to the clan to help keep them together, and keep the role of Piper in the Imperial eyes to a minimum.)
    • Debt 50 (Debt to imperial military for destruction of a TIE Fighter worth 50k credits)
  • Gift of Imperial Operations Manual for two Activities of his choice – Adds +1 Boost (Blue) Dice to checks for the activity.
    • Note – One choice made concerning Imperial Landing Procedures
