Magic Circle against Energy

  • 5th Level Abjuration (ritual)
  • Secret Crafts: Airologist, Darkologist, Earthologist, Elementologist, Fireologist, Waterologist
  • Casting time: 1 action
  • Range: touch
  • Components: V, S
  • Duration: Concentration, up to 1 hour
  • As protection from elements, but 20 ft radius from the person touched. Protects against energy type associated with secret craft. Elementals of the energy type must make a Wisdom save vs the spell DC to Attack or Move into the area unless attacked from someone already within the area of effect.
  • The Spell can be cast in reverse, making a temporary ward for an elemental which it can overcome with the same Wisdom saving throw.
  • This radius is also extended by the manifestation radius of their associated secret if activated.
  • Secret Craft Bonus: If you have advanced in the Elementologist secret craft, you can use this spell to affect multiple elements you have learnt to combine in that craft.

Design changes for Spells

Original Spell Lists: Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, Wizard

One thing to note, is that all spells that I am adding into this blog have the Spell list removed from them, besides anything I might be doing to tweak them for my home campaign. There is a source there if you want to look up the original version of the spell for your own campaigns, but mine does not need that information.

What has been added is the Secret Crafts, which replace the spell lists, as all spells not from the players handbook will only be available as part of the secret crafts of the world.

3rd Edition Version

  • Magic Circle against Elements
  • Abjuration
  • Level: Brd 5, Clr 5, Drd 5, Sor/Wiz 5
  • Components: V, S
  • Casting Time: 1 action
  • Range: Touch
  • Area: Emanates 10 ft from touched creature.
  • Duration: 10 minutes/level
  • Saving Throw: None (harmless)
  • Spell Resistance: No

As protection from elements, except that it protects everyone inside the area. Additionally, the spell prevents elemental creatures from approaching. This causes the natural weapon attacks of such creatures to fail and the creatures to recoil if such attacks require touching the warded creatures. The protection against contact by elementals creatures ends if any of the warded creates make an attack against or tries to force the barrier against the blocked creature. Spell resistance can allow a creature to overcome this protection and touch the warded creature.

As an option, a magic circle can be focused inwards rather than outwards. In this case it serves as an immobile, temporary magical prison for a summoned elemental creature. The caster must beat a creatures SR in order to keep it at bay, but the negation of natural weapons still appliers. If a creature too large to fit into the spell’s area is the subject of the spell, the spell acts as a normal protection from elements spell for that creature only.

This spell is not cumulative with endure elements, protection from elements, or resist elements and vice versa.
