Ann – Mystery of the Forgotten Dungeon – The Concept

In the city of Waterdeep rests a tavern called the Yawning Portal, named after the gaping pit in its common room. At the bottom of this crumbling shaft is a labyrinthine dungeon shunned by all but the most daring adventurers. Known as Undermountain, this dungeon is the domain of the mad wizard Halaster Blackcloak. Long has the Mad Mage dwelt in these forlorn depths, seeding his lair with monsters, traps, and mysteries. To what end? That question is a constant source of speculation and concern.

The idea is that each game year starting in AC 1004 (set after the events of the Darokin introduction using Waterdeep – Dragon Heist conversion)

Ann – Mystery of the Forgotten Dungeon – The Reveal

  • In AC 1004, The cartographer’s guide has discovered a dungeon under the yawning portal and has made it available for exploration and are paying to have it mapped. The cartographer’s guide have opened up a region called the Dungeon Level. They expect a new region to be opened up each spring until they have explored the place.
  • In AC 1005, After a year of exploration, more of the dungeon has been made available for exploration under the yawning portal and the cartographer’s guild are paying to have it mapped. The cartographer’s guide have opened up a region called the Arcane Chambers.
  • In AC 1006, After another year of exploration, more of the dungeon has been made available for exploration under the yawning portal and the cartographer’s guild are paying to have it mapped. The cartographer’s guide have opened up a region called the Sargauth Level.
  • In AC 1007, After another year of exploration, more of the dungeon has been made available for exploration under the yawning portal and the cartographer’s guild are paying to have it mapped. The cartographer’s guide have opened up a region called the Twisted Caverns and later in the year the Wyrllowwood.

Ann – Mystery of the Forgotten Dungeon – The Outcome

At the end of each month, starting from the third month of the year, 1d20 rooms of the dungeon are explored each month until that level is mapped. If it reaches the last month of the year all the remaining rooms are mapped in that month.

Concluding Thoughts

This is a yearly event that has goes late into the campaign. It provides the players with a chance at doing a dungeon crawl to escape from the politics of the storyline.

I am a long term gamer, I run 6 RPG's a fortnight, host board game, card game and LANs each about once a quarter and have an addiction to buying more games. Games I am currently running are Pathfinder (1st and 2nd Edition) and Dungeons and Dragons (5th Edition).
