This adventure was originally part of the Basic Adventures section of Gazetteer 1 – The Grand Duchy of Karameikos which I modified and one of the changes to be investigated as part of the Wrath of the Immortals storyline.

Mystery of the Duke’s Road Massacres. Spring (Thaumont) In Thaumont (3rd Month), an outpost near the Krakatos ruins is massacred. Investigation has tracks leading into the river, with a team from Rheddrian’s Investigation Bureau looking into it and finding nothing.

Mystery of the Duke’s Road Massacres – The Concept
Each year in the month of Thaumont (3rd Month) at the start of Spring, a merchant, or group of people go missing and are sometimes found dead. This has been happening for the last 30 years and occurs along the roads created as part of the Karamekios administration.
This has an intended interaction with Koriszegy Keep.
One of the famous haunted places of Karameikos is Koriszegy Keep, which once was the seat of power of the Traladaran Koriszegy family. As legend has it, some 200 years ago a great calamity befell the Koriszegys, breaking down their walls and destroying their family, and people who wander too close to the ruin often disappear.
The legend is true, those centuries ago, the head of the family tried to forge a pact with evil forces and, for his trouble, was changed into a vampire – but cursed so that he could never leave his own castle for more than a day.
On the map (in the Gazetteer) shows the keep as it is now, a ruin:
- is the still-standing chimney
- is the well, from which good water can still be drawn
- is where the old gatehouse used to stand
- is the easiest access into the ruin
- are the guard towers where, when he bothers to have servants, the Vampire Koriszegy stations them
- is the central cavern which is the vampire’s lair
- is a chamber, complete with pool, where his servant (often ghouls) stay
- is the hidden chamber where he keeps his coffin and treasure.
The vampire Koriszegy is mad but clever and should be a difficult encounter for doughty adventurers.
I am using this as the basis of the patriotic killer that plagues the duke’s road once a year for the characters to interact with. He will be operating along the lines of a serial killer that they can only find evidence dating back to the formation of the Duke’s Road.
Mystery of the Duke’s Road Massacres – The Reveal
The Storyline
A patriotic Killer is targeting enemies of the old country Traladara along the Duke’s Road.
- In AC 1001, the merchant caravan was from Glantri and not seen as a source of concern, the assumption of the investigators was that they had simply esed magic to go home.
- In AC 1002, goblins escaping something in their forest were found victim of the Thaumont Killer. This was seen as a good thing and nothing further was done.
- In AC 1003, it was the first time Black and Blue Dragonborn were seen, and they were travelling along Westron to Eastron road and a number of them were found dead by usual suspect.
- In AC 1004, the Thaumont Killer is considered to be responsible for the missing Gnome caravan, further investigations turn up a missing merchant from Ylaruam being the actual target.
- In AC 1005, a bunch of soldiers and merchants were slaughtered near the capital in the largest known occurrence of this mysterious Thaumont killer.
- In AC 1006, a few giants were discovered dead under mysterious circumstances.
- In AC 1007, A patrol of giants were found on the Dukes Road having died mysteriously.
- In AC 1008, A group of slavers from the Iron Ring were found on the Dukes Road having died mysteriously.

Each year reports of death along the road increase the mystery of the people involved.
Concluding Thoughts
A conclusion to this Mystery has not been found at this stage. The end game is planned to be later in the storyline, and not sure where and when it will be done.
