Galaxy Region – The Unknown Region

Unknown Regions represent the vast interstellar unknown reaches of galactic space. They are the true frontier. However, just because they are largely unexplored, that doesn’t mean they are uninhabited. Based on the number of species and other civilisations already known throughout the galaxy, it is a good bet that there are likely millions more. The Unknown Regions alone could be hiding expansive interstellar empires of its own. The term Unknown Regions most often applies to the unexplored western side of the galaxy, naturally barred from normal hyperspace travel.

The Unknown Regions, Unknown Space, Unknown Sector, or Unknown Territories was the collective term for all regions of the galaxy not formally charted; it differed from Wild Space in that Wild Space was usually minimally charted, but not fully explored.​

The Unknown Regions was broadly defined as areas not connected with the skein of reliable or well-known hyperspace routes spanning the galaxy, did not belong to the wider well-known Galactic community, did not look to Coruscant as the ultimate center of civilization, or were not under the broad hegemony of the Galactic Republic before the Galactic Civil War. Beyond the region’s outer edge lay the hyperspace disturbance beyond the edge of the galaxy.​

7G Sector

7G sector was a sector located in the Unknown Regions of the galaxy. It contained the Ilum system.

7G Sector Locations:

• Ilum System, Ilum – G7 – 7.8 7.5 (WS IW)

Bakura Sector

The Bakura sector was a sector located within the Outer Rim Territories and the Wild Space. It contained the planet Bakura and could be reached along the Shiritoku Spur.

Bakura Sector Locations:

• Timora System, Timora – G16 – 7.9 16.8 (WS NS)

Chiss Space

The Chiss Ascendancy, sometimes termed Chiss Space or the Chiss Empire by outsiders, was a portion of the galaxy just inside the Unknown Regions that was ruled by the Chiss.

Chiss Space Locations:

• Csilla System, Csilla – F8 – 6.1 8.8 (WS)
• The Redoubt – H7 – 8.8 7.9 (WS)

Dreighton Nebula

The Dreighton Nebula was a nebula located within the Dantus sector in the Outer Rim region of the galaxy which contained the planets Aeten II, Dreighton, and Imdaar, as well as the Belt of Arah.

Dreighton Nebula Locations:

• Aeten System, Aeten – J6 – 10.4 6.2 (WS)

Farana Sector

Part of the Tingel Arm

The Farana Sector was a region of space located within the Unknown Region and Wild Space portion of the Tingel Arm, rimward of the Corporate Sector.

Gardaji Sector

Part of the Tingel Arm

The Gardaji sector was in the Tingel Arm. It contained the Gardaji Rift. Within the rift was the original location of Zonama Sekot.

Gradilis Sector

The Gradilis Sector was in Wild Space where the planet Nirauan was located.

Mephout Dominion

The Mephout Dominion was a sector and government located in Wild Space. It contained the Mephout’s homeworld Mephout.

• Seoul System, Seoul – H20 – 8.1 20.8 (WS)

South Arm

The South Arm was a region of the galaxy, presumably an exterior arm on the southern end.

Ssi-ruuk Star Cluster

The Ssi-ruuk Star Cluster, also known as the Ssi-Ruuvi Cluster was a star cluster in the Unknown Regions which contained the Ssi’kaat system. The nearest planet not under Ssi-ruu control was Bakura, which they later invaded. Moments after the invasion, Gaeriel Captison sent a distress signal to New Republic and Imperial forces.

Tempered Wastes

The Tempered Wastes were a stellar-poor stretch of space in the Unknown Regions, west of the galactic core. The Lehon system—home to the Rakatan homeworld of Lehon, also known as Rakata Prime—was located within it.
