Gazetteer #3 – The Known World – The Principalities of Glantri

Source: The Principalities of Glantri (0e-gaz-03)

This is a setting of high magic, where only arcane casters are allowed, divine casters, dwarves, and halflings are considered to be beneath the protection of the law and its citizens. This gives free reign on anything regarding these people in the country if the accusations can be proved.

“It is early, and low over the mountains the sun sets the sky ablaze. The little red creature yawns, stretches its small batwings, and scratches its horny head. Suddenly, a gong echoes in the room below, making the creature jump. Almost falling, it grabs hold of the large statue on which it was sleeping.”​

​Down below, the students are preparing for their daily barrage or courses in geography, economics, history, royal lineages, and massive magical instruction (including new spell research and casting). it is rumoured that each of the school’s instructors is a member (or leader) of one of The Secret Crafts of Mystara – with strange, new abilities.​

​All who come to or live in glantri are searching for a secret – The Secret of the Radiance, a mythical force covering the whole of the Principalities.​

Glantri Character Options

Forbidden classes and races: Clerics are forbidden in this country, though the same is for dwarves, halflings and anyone relying on divine magic. Players can ignore this at their own peril.

What Characters need to Know

Seven Secret Crafts

This leads to the seven secret crafts of Glantri, which was introduced and will play a part in future storylines.

Each of these craft deal with secret power learned by wizards (as there were no other arcane casters in the original edition) and they each have their own society. Firstly there is the Masters of Alchemy (alchemists), will be converted over to making alchemical items as well as magical concoctions. Then we have the Masters of Dragons (dragonologists), who learn to take on aspects of dragons in their magic.

The next society is really four different societies at once, each with their own element of Air, Earth, Fire and Water. By the setting they should also have Entropy as an element to align it with the spheres of power using a five element symbology which I will be incorporating into this world. So they are the Masters of the Element of <insert element here> (<element> elementalist) who learn to incorporate their element into their magic.

Then we move onto the Masters of Illusions (mesmerists)  who play with peoples minds and the reality of sleep. Onto the Masters of Necromancy (necromancers) who are a step ahead of just a necromancy specialist. Then the Masters of the Runes (cryptomancers) who deal with the names of things which provide a power of their own. Not the same as runic magic, but along the same line. Will talk more about that when we get to GAZ7. The last of the secret crafts is the Mistresses of Witchcraft (witches) who channel the power of hag and curses.

There is one more craft that is never spoken of, and waits for those of intellect and power to discover it, only if they can see the light and follow the only true religion allowed in the country, that of Rad.

Located to the north of Darokin and the Broken Lands. They are to the West of Ethengar and the Heldann Freeholds. They are south of elven nation of Wendar.

    • Although triumphant in the end, Glantri has been devastated by the lengthy war. One principality (Blackhill) has been completely destroyed. A second (Caurenze) has shrunk to one heavily fortified castle occupied by a single person, Prince Innocenti, whose paranoia after the meteor crash reaches such heights that he assumes anyone approaching is trying to kill him and disintegrates them on the spot.
    • Many refugees settle into Western Glantri, where new principalities start to form. Rumours about that werewolves are attempting to create their own state. In addition, one of the humanoid leaders of the forces occupying Blackhill and part of Caurenze breaks with King Thar and begins to petition to become the head of a new principality.
    • Prince Etienne’s disappearance threatens to throw the government into chaos, but his youngest brother, Prince Henri d’Ambreville, steps into his brother’s post as head of the d’Ambrevilles and Catherine d’Ambreville, Eitenne’s estranged wife, takes over his role as Grand Master of the Great School of Magic. Of the current whereabout or status of Etienne d’Ambreville, the Immortal Rad, there is not a clue.
